Program Description for Engineering Day
Event: CAF will kick off Engineering Week 2012 with Explore Engineering - How Do They Do That? -a day-long festival of fun, hands-on activities designed to help families discover what engineers do, try out activities, have fun building, constructing, and solving engineering challenges.
Activity and presentation stations will be positioned throughout the main floor of the Santa Fe building. Activities will be structured for drop-in participation; tours and special presentations will be scheduled at specific times.
- Introduce engineers/engineering to CAF family audience
- Introduce activities that emphasize STEM concepts for Chicago area families with children ages 5-13 (STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) and students 14 -18 interested in engineering careers
- Build partnerships with the Chicago area engineering community

Time: 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.
Location: Chicago Architecture Foundation headquarters, Santa Fe Building 224 S. Michigan Ave. (corner of Michigan & Jackson), Chicago, IL 60604
Cost: Free
Audience: Activities are designed for Chicago area families with children ages 5-13 and high school students ages 14-18 who are interested in engineering careers
Activities: Hands-on activities + presentations emphasizing engineering related to buildings and other structures designed to engage children, students, and their adult companions. All activities will be offered throughout the day:
- CONSTRUCT: buildings and other structures using blocks, Legos, and newspaper, straws, and other easy to find materials
- SOLVE: engineering design challenges for bridges and other structures
- DESIGN: earth quake resistant high rise buildings with Shake, Rattle, and Roll!
- DISCOVER: the building materials of skyscrapers-steel and concrete
- VISIT: some of the engineering marvels in downtown Chicago on walking tours lead by CAF docents and engineers
- MEET: engineers from around the region and learn about the work they do to shape our cities
- LEARN: how engineers made the Willis Tower & John Hancock Center stand tall
- DISCOVER: the secrets behind designing and building the world's tallest structures in Imagine Big! an interactive presentation
